Grade 8 - Economics for Success (ESIS) - Available in English and French


Also called ESIS this program helps students explore the concepts of success, independence, employment and emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning in preparing for the future. Through the guidance of their classroom volunteers, students learn about the relationship between education and personal goals. They define success in personal terms, begin to understand the sots of living and explore the types of careers that match their goals and lifestyle experiences. Through participation in this program students learn to develop a positive attitude towards education and their future.

The Goals of the ESIS Program Are:

1) Understanding every opportunity is a stepping stone for future success.

2) Define "career" as a life path or journey.

3) Learn about the costs of living independently.

4) Identify that "success" has individual meaning.

5) Explore the relationship between education and personal goals.

The Four Modules for this Program Are:

Dream Your Success - Students view their perception of what success means to them. Students identify their own personal strengths, skills and interests in relation to job satisfaction. Keys to Success Game is played.

Keep Your Balance - In groups students develop a budget for independent living. Costs of wants and needs are looked at. Students are given a “pay cheque” for an entry-level job to see if they can live within their means.

Discover Yourself - Current skills are analyzed to determine their value for future job opportunities. Students are given the opportunity to complete mock interviews and complete job applications.

Plan Your Success - Students identify personal role models. A game is played to highlight and reinforce key terms and topics. At the end of the lesson students will set goals to start their career journey.

Volunteer Time Commitment for this Program: 1 full day or 2 half days plus 2.5 hours of training.
